Civil War Gettysburg Excavated Bone Button Hook / Boot Hook:
$27.13

WHAT YOU RECEIVE

• One original excavated mid-19th century bone (or antler/ivory-toned) button hook / boot hook recovered at Gettysburg

• Displayed in a black shadow-box frame with printed Gettysburg patriotic background (soldiers, American flag, “Gettysburg” lettering)

• Ready to hang or display as-is

This is a treasure-hunter sourced relic from the Richard “Dick” Hammond collection. Hammond (1929–2018) was a founding member of the Northern Virginia Relic Hunters Association (NVRHA), America’s oldest organized Civil War relic club (chartered 1972). He began detecting as a boy on family land near Dranesville, Fairfax County, Virginia, built his first detector in 1954 after recovering a U.S. belt plate at Ball’s Bluff, and hunted for more than fifty years, primarily in Northern Virginia and the upper Potomac. He kept every find and recorded the recovery location. His collection was cataloged and sold at Redding sale Service, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, January 13–14, 2024. These relics were purchased from that dispersal.

You are buying a piece with a documented paper trail, not a relic with a story invented last week. Among Northern Virginia collectors, Hammond provenance is the point.

ITEM DETAILS

Period bone button hook (also called a boot hook or shoe button hook) of the type used to fasten the high-button boots and gaiters common in the 1850s–1860s. Features a long, gently curved shaft, a distinctive hooked “beak” or bird-head terminal, and a slightly flared opposite end. Length approximately 4¾ inches (see ruler photo). Honest excavated surface with age staining, soil discoloration, and wear consistent with a Gettysburg excavated relic condition for an organic object. Stable, no active flaking. Surface shows typical ground staining and minor surface loss expected of a dug bone artifact. Frame is modern and included for display. Photos show the actual item you will receive.

IMPORTANT

Sold as a Civil War period / mid-19th century excavated bone button hook recovered at Gettysburg. No specific battlefield sector, camp, or owner provenance is claimed beyond the Gettysburg recovery and Hammond collection history. Adult collector item. Not a toy.
