One of the lesserknown titles of the Madonna, this is a cast figurine statuette ofOur Lady of Montserrat, the original of which is located inCatalonia, Spain. Once beloved by the Mercedarian Order in theCatholic Church, the ancient figure was reputedly brought fromConstantinople and portrays the Virgin & Child in the “Seat ofWisdom” posture, with both figures holding the globes of the worldin their hands.
This iscopper/brass cast in the lost wax style, with title inscribed on thebottom edge front. It stands 4” high on a semi hollow base, 1 3/8by 1 5/8” in size and weights approx 275 grams, perfect as a paperweight.Condition graded very fine, note the patinizationon the Virgin's face, as duplicated from the original figure- sometimescall The "Black Madonna" because of this effect.
