Ijust completed making this extremely beautiful Amboyna Burl woodtwist ink pen. It was made with the highest quality Amboyna Burl woodavailable. It simply does not get any better than this. The body ofthe pen is made with Amboyna Burl and is accented with Gold andSilver metal pen parts. The ink cartridge is a Parker ink cartridgewith Black ink. AmboynaBurl wood (Pterocarpus indicus) is probably the most popular exoticwood that people want for their custom-made ink pens and other highend wooden items. The supply of this material is very limited,contributing to its high cost. Unlike obtaining wood that can beharvested from the entire tree, Amboyna Burl wood only comes from anirregular growth that forms on some of the Narra trees called a burl.This makes the supply of this wood very limited.

Ilike the two-tone look of the Amboyna Burl Heartwood mixed with itsCream-colored Sapwood. It takes special cutting of the burl wood toobtain the right blend of Heartwood with Sapwood to make a nicelooking two tone ink pen.

Thisburl wood does not grow straight and strong like a tree does. Thisgreatly adds to the beauty of the burl wood itself by adding allsorts of exceptional patterns to it. So, to do things right the woodneeds to be sent to a company that does professional “Stabilizing”.This is a high pressure, high heat, process that infuses a clear acrylicliquid deep into the wood. This is called Stabilizing and gives theburl wood strength. It adds additional cost to the total amount forme to make a pen out of Amboyna Burl wood. Without stabilizing theburl wood would easily chip, crumble, or “tearout” as it getsworked. All of my Amboyna Burl wood ink pens with be made withstabilized wood.

MyAmboyna Burl wood comes from vintage stock from the Laos People’sDemocratic Republic (Laos). I purchase the burl wood in small blocksand cut it into pen blanks. I have a photo that shows a few pieces of Amboyna Burl. After getting the wood stabilized I then cut itinto pen blanks. The photo shows examples of Amboyna, somecombined with its Sapwood. It is from pieces like this that I startmaking these ink pens.
