Autograph Letter signed: \"Edward Everett\", 3 pages (integral leaf), 4½x7. Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1850 December 24. To \"W. C. Bond\", in full: \"I received this afternoon a letter from Dr. Holland, in which he says, \'I have not been neglectful of the matter of the Toronto observatory or of my promise to Mr. Bond. I have had frequent communications with Col. Sabine on the subject & have spoken strongly to Lord Grey upon it & subsequently written to him on the subject of your letter. He has expressed to me his own acquiescence, but says that the final decision rests with the Chancellor of the Exchequer. He has promised however to speak to him on the matter & I shall take an opportunity of doing the same. I have no doubt of obtaining the object. Mr. Lawrence told me some time ago, that he had sent to Lord Palmerston the papers, which have since been transmitted to Lord Grey & the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir G. Wood). Pray let Mr. Bond know this, with my warm regards to this excellent man. I see that he has obtained indications of a third ring of Saturn. I feel a personal interest & gratification in any discovery emanating from the Cambridge Observatory\'. Yours ever, dear Sir, with great regard.\" Edward Everett (1794-1865) represented Massachusetts as a Whig in the House of Representatives (1825-1835) and in the U.S. Senate (1853-1854). He was Governor of Massachusetts (1836-1840), U. S. Minister to Great Britain (1841-1845), President of Harvard (1846-1849), President Millard Fillmore\'s Secretary of State (1852-1853) and the Constitution Union Party candidate for Vice President (with John Bell) in 1860, winning 39 electoral votes. In 1863, Everett shared the platform with President Lincoln at Gettysburg. Ordained a Unitarian Minister, Edward Everett was one of America\'s greatest orators. On Nov. 19, 1863, he was the keynote speaker at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery, where he delivered a two-hour oration. Everett\'s words, however, were eclipsed at the time and ever since by the brief closing remarks of President Lincoln\'s famous \"Gettysburg Address.\" A humbled Everett remarked to the President afterward, \"I should be glad if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes.\" When Everett wrote this letter, he had recently left the Presidency of Harvard, and was serving as an advisor to Secretary of State Daniel Webster. On Webster\'s recommendation, he would succeed Webster on the latter\'s death in 1852. Adhesive residue on verso. Toned. Multiple folds. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn and creased.
