Early 1900s Souvenir China Plate Main Street Montrose Colorado Wheelock RARE:
$59.99

This is an early 1900s souvenir china plate with the front image showing a \'Main Street, Montrose, Colo.\" I\'m not sure I\'ve ever seen another Main Street souvenir piece from Montrose. The center image is crisp and detailed. It shows the downtown business district with numerous storefronts and business buildings. There are people in the image walking along Main Street, as well as what looks like a wagon. Also telephone poles, street lights, awnings, a clock and signage (\"The Boston Company\").
The plate is decorated with pale green and yellow accent coloring, gold detailing and flowers (daisies and either roses or peonies). These souvenir pieces were imported from Europe (primarily Bavaria, Prussia, Germany and Austria) by local merchants and then sold to resident customers and tourists. This plate is backstamped:
WheelockMade in AustriaforFrasier & HillMontrose, Colo.Vienna
The plate is approximately 7 1/4\" in diameter.
Montrose was established in the Uncompahgre Valley in Western Colorado, with the first settlers arriving in the 1870s. The area was opened for settlement after the Ute Indians were relocated in 1881. The town was founded primarily to supply nearby mining communities of the San Juan Mountains such as Ouray, Telluride and Silverton, but as mining declined, agriculture became the mainstay of the local economy, with settlers cultivating fruit, grain, and livestock.
I couldn\'t find much information on Frasier and Hill, but did come across an article about F.F. Frasier producing award winning varieties of apples.
