King Tutankhamun, often called King Tut, was one of ancient Egypt’s most famous pharaohs. He ruled Egypt during the 18th Dynasty, around 1332–1323 BCE, becoming king at a very young age—probably around nine years old.
Tutankhamun became pharaoh during a period of major religious and political change. His predecessor, Akhenaten, had promoted the worship of the sun god Aten and moved the capital to a new city. During Tutankhamun’s reign, Egypt gradually returned to its traditional religious beliefs, with the worship of Amun and other ancient Egyptian gods restored.
Although Tutankhamun ruled for only about ten years and accomplished relatively little compared with some of Egypt’s more powerful pharaohs, he became world-famous because of the discovery of his nearly intact tomb, in the Valley of the Kings in 1922 by British archaeologist Howard Carter. The tomb contained thousands of extraordinary objects, including jewelry, weapons, furniture, chariots, and the famous solid-gold funerary mask.
Tutankhamun died at approximately 18 or 19 years old. The exact circumstances of his death remain a subject of historical and scientific research. His tomb and treasures have provided historians with an extraordinary glimpse into the life, beliefs, art, and craftsmanship of ancient Egypt.
