The 2.5-pound range of hammers are one of the more common choices for smiths starting out. It provides enough weight to do some small general hand-forging, it's great for doing finish work, and it feels great overall.
This listing is for our standard 2.5-poundrounding hammer. It has flat forged cheeks, square trough lines and is stamped with my touchmark and numbered like all of my hammers. The photos are of my standard 2.5-poundhammer. These hammers are all hand-forged, one-at-a-time, so PLEASE understand there will be some variations. However, we are committed to providing high quality tools and you can purchase with confidence, knowing that there are well over 1900 of my hammers in the hands of happy blacksmiths world-wide.
The handle is top grade American hickory, kiln dried, custom fit specifically for this hammer, torch burn finished.
All of my hammer heads are forged from new 1045 steel, water-quenched, and oven-tempered, for a consistent and long-lasting tool. These hammers are forged by hand, by me, in my shop, in Kentucky, with the use of forges, presses, power hammers, and hand-forging.
The rounding hammer features two faces...the rounding and the flat face. The rounding face concentrates the force of each hammer blow and allows you to pin-point the exact location of each hammer blow, exactly where it needs to be. The flat side is used to smooth out your work at the end. My hammer faces are ground with a series of grinding belts up to 180 grit and then buffed on a fine buffing wheel for a smooth, clean, even finish.
