This charming French genre stereoview captures a delightful staged tableau of a street musician and a young drummer boy performing before a painted studio backdrop depicting a European village street complete with a CAFE storefront, cobblestone lane, and timber-framed buildings. The older performer wears a fanciful ornamented helmet topped with a spray of decoration and carries a large stringed hurdy-gurdy or barrel instrument strapped across his body, while the boy in a flat cap and scarf beats a small snare drum slung at his hip.
These two figures represent itinerant street entertainers, a common sight in nineteenth century France, and the scene was carefully arranged in a photographer\'s studio to create a picturesque and slightly comic vignette of everyday street life. Mounted on a bright orange stereo card and produced for the popular parlor stereoscope trade, this is a lovely example of a European genre stereograph aimed at armchair travelers and collectors of the period.
