Completed in 1922 to replace a six-car ferry and become the first steel cantilever truss bridge across the middle Columbia River, the structure was painted green and dubbed the “Green Bridge”.
Originally a toll bridge until fees were lifted in 1931, it linked eastern and western Washington as part of the Inland Empire Highway and later the transcontinental Yellowstone Trail.
During World War II, the bridge marked a dividing line between segregated Pasco and Kennewick amid the Hanford construction boom.
Replaced by the Cable (Ed Hendler) Bridge in 1978 and removed in 1990, the original crossing’s piers remain visible beneath the modern spans, now a riverside walking route.
