Here we have an authentic rare old Italian, Murano art glass millefiori paperweight, made circa the 1920-30s. Decorated with hundreds of unbelievably gorgeous and rare murrine canes—millefiori (thousand flowers). The photos should represent a 360-degree coverage of the piece. It's a stunning and substantial article of antique artistic excellence! This is the largest millefiori egg we have seen! The clear satin applied footed base shows the expected shelf-wear consistent with its age. Completely damage-free! Attributed to Antica Fratelli Toso (see History, below). Guaranteed genuine! And, it's even more beautiful in person! Excellent addition to an art glass collection, or a thoughtful gift for a special person—including yourself of course! 

 

FULL CONDITION REPORT: We thoroughly inspected this piece and found no cracks, chips, nicks, scuffs, flea bites, flakes, hairlines, significant scratches, repairs, or evidence of grinding or restoration that can be seen or felt. Any natural indentations, bubbles, tool marks, and/or any other natural textural features are all original to this piece and normal for hand-blown glass. FRATELLI TOSO HISTORY
Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso is a traditional Murano glass factory since 1854. Fratelli Toso has always been one of the best in murrina production; indeed our collection includes some of the most beautiful examples of murrina vases in Murano. The value of our collection is made up by antique and original murrina used, impressive design and glass masters' craftsmanship. We do work with museums, important collectors and sale houses worldwide. Arnoldo comes directly from Toso brothers who started up the factory in 1854. He is in the family business since the '50s and from 1981 he runs Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso by himself. From that moment on he has successfully managed Fratelli Toso glass collection; he works in the business of antique trade but also in collecting modern art together with his daughter Caterina.

BEWARE of FAKE Murano Glass!

 

All Murano art glass is made on the small Italian island group of Murano--in Venice Bay. Even those glassblowers who may have learned in Italy, or have ancestors from Murano, don't make 'Murano glass'! The Chinese have for the past 20 years been trying to copy Murano birds, free-forms, fish, sailboats, and vases--producing inferior quality items that they mass-produce in China and flood the U.S. market, trying to pass them off as genuine. Any item labeled "Murano Cristalleria Ann Primrose", "Murano Minchella Collection", "Murano Stile d'Art" "VEISES-MURANO" or "Murano Glassware" are easily recognized as one of the more common Chinese knock-off brands. Many fakes are not labeled, or have telltale labels removed! These manufacturers, importers, and retailers are engaging in blatant lies, trying to convince buyers to purchase a phony, inferior product!

 How to PROTECT YOURSELF: Always buy from a reputable, knowledgeable dealer, or do your homework and research on how to tell the difference! It takes examining and studying hundreds of examples to know for sure, but here is a quick clue. Thumbnail advice: The fakes are usually crude, inferior work, that when labeled almost always say "Murano" and rarely say "Made in Italy". They rarely have metallic inclusions (flakes/dust, a.k.a. aventurine) and when they do it is never real gold. We hope that helps. Brief Murano History

The island of Murano near Venice has been producing glass since the thirteenth century – 1292. Having been banned from mainland Venice, for the threat of fire hazard, the island's glass furnaces first produced beads and mirrors, soon progressing to chandeliers and architectural stained glass for Italy’s hundreds of churches, chapels, and basilicas. Soon they widened their output to include pressed glass, tableware, and art glass. The surge in popularity of beautiful, high-quality decorative glass in the post-war boom, created a huge mid-20th-century expansion in demand and production in Murano. Notable designers include Flavio Poli, Archimede Seguso, Ricardo Licata, Gino Cenedese, Paolo Venini, Antonio Salviati, Dino Martens, Martinuzzi, Mandruzzato and Ercole and Angelo Barovier to name but a very few. The hardworking Italian glassblowers of Murano can truly be called the Godfathers of modern-day glass.
