Weighing nearly 2 pounds, this substantial bowl displays layers of warm amber, caramel brown, cream, ivory, and translucent white. NATURAL STONE ART
What makes this bowl particularly attractive is the contrast between its smooth, luminous interior and naturally textured rim.
The edge exposes numerous layers of banded material in shades ranging from honey and amber to deep caramel and white. In several areas, the bands are remarkably fine and closely spaced, producing the layered appearance visible in the close-up photographs.
Natural pockets, crystalline areas and irregular formations have intentionally been retained around portions of the rim rather than completely polished away.
This gives the bowl considerably more character than a uniformly machined stone bowl.
MEXICAN ONYX
The material commonly sold as Mexican Onyx or Amber Onyx is generally a form of banded calcite, rather than the chalcedony variety of onyx used in traditional gemology. The name "Mexican Onyx" is a long-established trade name for this decorative stone.
Its alternating mineral layers can produce spectacular bands of cream, honey, amber, brown and translucent white.
Because those patterns were created naturally, every bowl carved from the material is unique.
