This vintage square glass promotional ashtray dates from the 1950s to the 1960s, produced during the mid-century heyday of the historic Hotel Humboldt in Winnemucca, Nevada.
History of the Hotel Humboldt
The Beginning: Built on the site of the former El Dorado Hotel (which burned down in 1918), the prominent multi-story brick Hotel Humboldt celebrated its grand opening in 1923. It was financed in large part by George Wingfield, a highly influential Nevada banker and gold mining magnate.
A Regional Hub:Promoted heavily as the \"Gateway to the Scenic West\" along U.S. Highways 40 and 95, the hotel served as the premier social center for Northern Nevada travelers, local civic clubs, and gamblers. The venue featured a fully equipped cafe, a cocktail bar, and an early-era slot machine casino.
Famous Guests:During World War II, the property famously hosted surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and his wife Gala. While they were sleeping at the hotel in July 1942, the FBI briefly searched their vehicle after a local police chief mistakenly profiled them as fugitive German saboteurs.
The Closing
The Hotel Humboldt closed its doors to the public when it was completely destroyed by a massive, catastrophic fire in 1975. Though the building was originally marketed on vintage postcards as \"fireproof,\" it ultimately met the same fate as the structure that preceded it
