【 Description 】

This is a tasteful netsuke ornament featuring a set of a wooden gourd-shaped sake bottle and a small sake cup.

It is an exceptionally finely crafted piece, with a ring fitted around the narrow waist of the gourd.

This ring is called a "Yukan" (遊環). Rather than being made by connecting parts afterward, it is crafted using an extremely advanced and labor-intensive traditional technique in which the ring is carved out and separated from a single piece of wood. This seamless, one-piece carving creates an almost miraculous beauty of form, along with a tasteful sense of playfulness as the ring rolls freely in your hand. Please enjoy this ingenious traditional craftsmanship.

The cord can be adjusted using the appropriately sized ojime bead.

【 What is Netsuke? 】

Netsuke are traditional Japanese miniature sculptures that have been used since the 17th century (Edo period).

At that time, traditional Japanese clothing such as kimono had no pockets, so small items like coin purses or medicine containers were carried by hanging them from cords tied to the sash (obi).

To prevent these items from slipping through, netsuke were used as toggles to secure the cord above the sash.

Netsuke were more than just practical tools; they were intricately carved with great skill and often depicted animals, people, legends, and scenes from Japanese folklore.

These miniature works of art reflect the craftsmanship, humor, and cultural richness of the time, and are highly valued by collectors around the world.
