Kirk-Maher Co. 1918 Business Statement Malone NY Confectionery Invoice:
$13.99

A vintage business statement from the Kirk-Maher Company, manufacturers and jobbers of confectionery and ice cream, documents a commercial transaction from the early twentieth century. The printed header identifies the company’s location as Malone, New York, with the specific address of 59 West Main Street. The document’s date line, partially obscured by a small piece of tape, reads “MALONE, N. Y. … 191,” while a handwritten notation of “Pd 10/9/18” confirms the payment date as October 9, 1918, placing this artifact firmly within the final year of World War I. The statement is made out to “M. Callahan Co.” of Blue Mountain Lake, New York, a community in the Adirondack region of Hamilton County. The printed text includes the ledger heading “To KIRK-MAHER COMPANY, DR.,” with the abbreviation “Dr.” standing for debtor, followed by a list of goods or services rendered. The body of the statement contains handwritten entries, including a balance and a total amount of $218.99, with a notation indicating payment via “ck# 2329.” A printed disclaimer advises the recipient to notify the company if the statement does not agree with their books, a common practice intended to ensure the accuracy of accounts kept manually. The reverse side of the document shows ghosting from the printed text on the front, including the mirrored company name and product line, along with a stamped or printed number “101” in the upper left corner. The paper exhibits significant age-toning and yellowing, with small tears and holes along the top edge consistent with filing or stapling, and a horizontal fold line across the center. A rust-colored stain from a metal fastener is visible in the upper right corner. This statement exemplifies the material culture of regional commerce in northern New York, illustrating the manual bookkeeping methods and business relationships of the era. The Kirk-Maher Company, a prominent regional supplier of sweets and ice cream, served other businesses like M. Callahan Co., and this document provides a tangible link to the commercial infrastructure of the Adirondack region during a period of significant social and economic change.
