Offered here is an antique ladies The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) medal. These were Union Civil War badges worn after the auxiliary went national in 1886. The metals: top bar pin back working perfectly with straight, tight clasp, and with F. L. C. (fraternity, loyalty, charity) clear and clean: bottom five-point star design with soldier and sailor shaking hands with a woman and child in between. Unsure of metal but I believe they are brass. Both clean with no damage. The double-layered patriotic ribbon with true red white and blue and 13 stars is in excellent antique condition. Minor soiling and has reinforcement stitches taken where it connects on pinback, which I\'ve seen on nearly every other pin like this. No deterioration.
In 1881, the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic was established to help the aging veterans and to aid their widows and orphans. The center star with solders shaking hands with children between, are all flanked by a flag and eagle and an ax and a bundle of rods for the union. Surrounding this centerpiece is \'Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic 1886.\' The medal is about 2 1/2\" long.
We are cleaning our our parent\'s estate and this was found as an old relic from my Dad\'s family, who descended from Union soldiers in the North. I don\'t know the exact age, but it is definitely an antique. It comes to you from non-smoking home!
