Large Hand-Carved African Wood Relief Sculpture – Village Life / Market Scene
Offered is a striking large African hand-carved wooden sculpture/relief depicting an extensive village or community scene.
This impressive piece features numerous individually carved human figures engaged in what appear to be everyday communal activities, including food preparation, carrying vessels and baskets, working with tools, and other village-life activities. The carving is exceptionally detailed, with figures, containers, implements and other elements carved in multiple levels of relief.
The wooden sculpture is approximately 30” tall and is carved from a substantial piece of wood. The front is extensively carved while the reverse is primarily the natural/hand-worked wood surface. The piece is freestanding with a substantial carved base.
The subject matter and style are reminiscent of East African Makonde/Ujamaa “Tree of Life” and community carvings, although I have not been able to definitively establish the artist, exact country of origin, or date. I am therefore selling it as an African folk-art / ethnographic wood carving rather than making an unsupported attribution.
Please note there is a crack at the lower bottom base. It’s hard to see from the front but it is there. Sculpture looks good for its age and material. Please see photos for condition and as part of the description. Happy to answer any questions.
