Up for sale is a substantial and beautifully hand-carved vintage Canadian soapstone polar bear sculpture by the well-known settler artist Dieter (Dietrich) Muckenheim, signed on the base under his studio name "DIMU".
Active from the 1960s through the 1980s in Ontario, Muckenheim created striking, minimalist animal figurines heavily inspired by traditional Inuit art forms. While often categorized generally as Canadian art or tourist art, his pieces have a dedicated following among collectors of retro Mid-Century Modern decor and Canadian stone carvings. ✨
