Historical Notes
In 1926, Long Beach was one of the fastest-growing cities in California. The city had been booming since the discovery of oil in nearby Signal Hill in 1921, and its waterfront was a hub of recreation and commerce. Excursion boats like the one pictured were a staple of the Long Beach waterfront, ferrying tourists and locals to nearby Catalina Island or simply offering leisure cruises along the coast. The Pike amusement zone drew visitors from across Southern California, and the harbor was expanding rapidly to accommodate growing maritime trade. Less than six years after this photo was taken, Long Beach would be struck by the devastating 1933 earthquake, which killed 120 people and reshaped much of the city\'s older building stock - making photos like this a rare pre-disaster document of the city\'s early skyline.
