This chess set is marketed by Loon Lake Decoy Company. This Pheasants and Turkeys design was made specifically as the more rare Limited Edition for the Friends of the NRA. In fact, each piece has NRA on their caps. It is an heirloom chess set crafted from an original wood carving by William Stark and is hand painted.
All pieces are in excellent condition with no cracking or chips and are bright and clean. With theexception for the 2 orange knights minor defect detailed further in the description and in photo's.
It is a Turkey Hunters (in camouflage) verses Pheasant Hunters (in blaze orange) chess set. The main pieces are 5 1/4 to 3 1/2 " tall (includes a 1" base) and the pawns (strutting turkey or cock pheasant) are 2 3/4 " (includes a 1/2" base).
The included chess board is wood and the pieces can be stored in the base in their original bubble wrap with wood dividers. The massive, sturdy board is 21 X 21" and 4" deep. also with a 1-inch base. The board is in good condition except for some minor scuffing and corner damage.
This would make a great item for a National Wild Turkey Federal or Pheasant Forever banquet and was included in some NWTF banquets in the past. This is a beautiful unique chess set.
Unlike many other sets, the hinge on this set is solid and feels strong. The heavy lid opens and closes surprisingly easily, staying in position. this is very rare among these sets. this one is in perfect working order.
This is a rare complete set with all of the pieces, however the tips of the shotguns held by 1 of each Hunter's Knights are broken off at the ends. 1 rifle tip remains in the bubble wrap for its Camouflaged knight. it could be glued back on. it is not altogether noticeable, since the knights are in 2 handed grip aiming out with their left hand extended to stabilize. that is the point where the tiny tip past the grip, is missing.
This would look great in a hunters cabin or vacation house of your favorite hunter, outdoorsman, or NRA member.
This NRA Limited Edition is not to be confused with the more common Ducks Unlimited varieties. This is the elite version. The lesser versions sell for $300 in poor to average condition with pieces missing. it is estimated a good condition complete one of the lesser, more common sets would sell for $500 at an sale house.But, this is a very rare working condition, above average complete set of the rare Limited Edition made for Friends of the NRA. This set is numbered and stamped with a certificate of Authenticity on the back.

The pictures don't do this set justice, it's so huge and sturdy. IT is the centerpiece of any room it is in, drawing attention and fascination.
