This listing is for a collection of 3 rough, sem-hemishpherical Brazilian agates that are prime for lapidary work, slabs, cabochons - or to display as is. Each agate is partially covered in a thin layer of basalt, however each agate also reveals banding formations within. Each agate is approximately 5” - 6.5” inches wide.
**NOTE: Pictures are taken wet & dry.
Brazil has the largest agate deposits in the world; mostly in Southern Brazil. This area also has the largest known basalt flow on earth and agates from this region are believed to be approximately 130 million years old, a stark contrast in age compared to Oregon agates.

Agates are unique because it is a mineral that’s never been able to be replicated in a laboratory. Agates develop over millions of years in metamorphic, igneous & volcanic rocks with a precise combination of time, water and various mineral deposits/composition. Agates are typically composed of varying amounts of chalcedony, silica & quartz. The many different colors that agates can have are attributed to small amounts of additional trace minerals & impurities that made their way into the agate cavity (by seeping groundwater) during its formation; ie: copper, iron oxides, sulfur, moganite, etc.
The ornamental use of agates goes back to Ancient Greece, and was worn by Greek warriors and the use of polished agates date back to the 3rd millennium BCE in the Indus Valley. The name it has today was given by Theophrastus, a Greek philosopher and naturalist, who discovered the stone along the shores of the Drillo River in Sicily.
