Five strange and unexpectedly beautiful moments, curated from the anonymous photographic record of the late 1920s and early 1930s.Each original photograph has something unusual about its subject, composition or accidental atmosphere:• A woman stands upright on skis in the snow, bundled in an eccentric assortment of winter clothing.
• A solemn, bespectacled woman appears partly concealed behind a tree.
• An older woman sits beside a glowing fireplace while a bloom of accidental light overtakes one side of the room.
• Two young women hold dolls and stare rather severely toward the camera.
• Two men become nearly abstract silhouettes against the sky, one unmistakably smoking a pipe.The final image is an especially striking example of accidental art in vernacular photography. Its reverse is identified with two handwritten names and “Saranac Lake, 1929.” The names appear to read “Harry Summers” and “Mr. Kenney,” but the handwriting is not entirely clear.The photograph of the young women and their dolls has an equally wonderful handwritten explanation:“They are sitting

The doll photograph has handwritten numbers along the lower border. The silhouette has a faint vertical crease or processing line near its center.
