Here is a unique caliper. This is the first one of these I have ever seen. Made by Lownentraut MFG. Co. Newark, NJ USA. Anyways it is a pair of 4-1/2\" Firm-Joint Outside Calipers. Works good. No owner engravings. 1 bb sized spot of pinhead pitting on one of the front legs down from the name. Nice survivor.

He emigrated from Germany to America in 1851. Peter became a United States citizen in 1860.
He learned the art of Japanning (a European imitation of East Asian lacquerwork) and went on to open a shop with his brother, Frederick. Unfortunately, the shop was destroyed by fire in 1859. In 1861, Peter and his brother Frederick moved to Bloomington, Illinois. Peter returned to Newark, New Jersey, in 1864. After working in the beer and liquor industry, Peter turned his attention to tool making.
Lowentraut found P. Lowentraut Company in 1871. In 1872, he was listed as living and working at 256 Lawrence Street in Newark, New Jersey. The business moved to 254 Market Street and then to 15 Fair Street (1875).
Lowentraut’s business grew. In 1880, the company was located at 276 Haley Street. He issued his first catalog in the early 1880s. The inventory included calipers, chisels, dividers, edge tools, hammers, hooks, knives, pliers, punchers, saw sets, saws, scrapers, and washer cutters.
In April 1883, Lowentraut built a factory at the corner of Kent and Bremer Streets in Newark. The company added a self-adjusting wrench to the tool line in 1884. In the same year, Lowenstaut contracted with John H. Graham & Co. of New York to sell its wares, a practice that continued until the company\'s demise.
P. Lowentraut is best known for its combination wrench-brace, which served as a brace, vise, or wrench. In 1890, P. Lowentraut had approximately 125 employees.
In the early 1890s, Lowentraut made ice skates in response to the ice-skating craze of that era. Skate design underwent continued improvement through the 1890s.
Peter Lowentraut died in 1910. He left the business to his wife, Anna. In 1914, Anna incorporated P. Lowentraut Manufacturing Company.
