Photo Overview
Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon share a lighthearted moment on the beach in this classic scene from Billy Wilder\'s "Some Like It Hot" (1959). Lemmon, disguised as "Daphne" in a vintage women\'s bathing suit and blonde wig, holds a towel while Monroe, radiant in a matching dark swimsuit, laughs and shields her eyes from the sun. The beach scenes for the film were shot at the Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, California, standing in for a fictional Florida resort. Extras can be seen milling about in the sandy background, adding to the bustling seaside atmosphere.
This 8x10 publicity still was distributed by the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1987 for a screening of the film as part of their Thursdays Comic Directions series.
Historical Notes
"Some Like It Hot" was released on March 29, 1959 and became one of the most celebrated comedies in cinema history. The film was a massive box office hit, grossing over $25 million against a $2.8 million budget. Jack Lemmon received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance as Jerry/Daphne, and the film won the Oscar for Best Costume Design. The American Film Institute later ranked it as the greatest American comedy film of all time. For Marilyn Monroe, the production was notoriously difficult - she required dozens of takes for simple scenes and frequently arrived late to set, straining her relationship with director Billy Wilder. Despite the tensions, her performance as Sugar Kane Kowalczyk became one of her most iconic roles. Monroe would go on to make only three more films before her tragic death in August 1962 at age 36. Lemmon\'s career flourished for decades after, earning him two Academy Awards and cementing his status as one of Hollywood\'s greatest actors. The Hotel del Coronado, where the beach scenes were filmed, has since become a pilgrimage site for fans of the movie and remains one of the most photographed hotels in California.

Print analysis
This is a Type 2 photograph - a later print made from an original 1959 negative or copy negative. The film was produced in 1959, but the back of the photo bears a 1987 Brattle Theatre press release, indicating this print was produced circa the late 1980s for theatrical revival publicity purposes. The photographic paper appears consistent with 1980s silver gelatin stock. The print number "3386" on the front is a studio production still number from the original filming. This is a c1980s print of a 1959 movie still.
