MARTIN VAN BUREN served as the nation’s eighth president of the United States, winning election in 1836. He lost re-election in 1840 and failed to win the Democratic nomination in 1844. Later in his life, Van Buren emerged as an elder statesman and an important anti-slavery leader who led the Free Soil Party ticket in the 1848 presidential election.
Offering Van Buren’s Free Frank signature attached to s U.S. Senate speech delivered on February 15, 1836, by Mr. Wright of New York. At the time of this speech, Van Buren was Andrew Jackson’s Vice President and President Pro Tempore of the Senate. In November 1836, he was elected President.
The speech, 11 pp, dealt with relations between the United States and France with relation to difficulties the U.S. was having with England.
Comes with an engraving of Van Buren made from an original painting by Alonzo Chappel, an American historical painter best known for his paintings depicting the personalities and evens of the American Revolution and early 19th-century American history.
Toning and some foxing to the speech, which is executed on irregular sheets, somewhat typical of such speeches, and disbound. The Van Buren signature with the word “Free” is attached to the top margin and has some toning. Otherwise very good and a great example of American history.
