He is a member of the family known for these intense designs on smaller pieces. He is the brother-in-law of renowned potter Fabian Ortiz. Learning from Fabian through the years it is sometimes difficult to detect where one\'s skills leave off and where the other picks up, as their talents are so intertwined. His scrolls, swirls, feathering and patterns are valued for their intricate and intense flow, all totally hand painted. The materials used to make his fine pieces are derived from the land surrounding Mata Ortiz, In Northern Mexico. The soil types for the clay and the materials for dyes occur in unique blends found only in this area.Piece is 2.5 inches tall x 3.33 inches in diameter. The opening is 1.5 inches in diameter.I will include a pottery ring with piece.All Mata Ortiz Pottery is hand made using the coil - pinch method - hand painted - etched - carved. Some using the sgraffito method for detail then fired most using outside burn method. The hand painted and etched - carved is done by hand they do not use stencils. There are many steps involved in making these gorgeous pieces. They are not just mold made and factory finished totally hand made.I personally hand selected this gorgeous piece from the artist. Named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, which is near the archeological site, the style was propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Quezada learned on his own to recreate this ancient pottery and then went on to update it. By the mid 1970\'s, Quezada was selling his pottery and teaching family and friends to make it and the pottery was able to penetrate the U.S. markets thanks to traders. By the 1990\'s, the pottery was being shown in museums and other cultural institutions and sold in fine galleries.
