This beautiful mid-20th century Mexican hand-glazed enamel tile features a vibrant still life of fruit including grapes, apple, pineapple, citrus and berries, executed in raised glossy enamel over a ceramic tile.
A brass plate on the frame reads:
“ESCUELA MEXICANA – ESMALTE EN METAL – SIGLO XX”
(Mexican School – Enamel on Metal – 20th Century)
Although the plate references “metal,” this refers to the enamel technique. The artwork itself is a ceramic tile (azulejo) finished with rich enamel glazing — a well-known Mexican decorative art form from the mid-1900s.
The tile is mounted in a wonderfully aged rustic wood frame that enhances its folk art character.
