The composition is particularly attractive, combining one of Old Montreal’s important early commercial buildings with a wonderful street-level transportation scene. A pedestrian appears prominently at lower left, while the streetcar and surrounding architecture provide an evocative glimpse of Montreal during the early electric-transit era.
Completed in 1889, the New York Life Building was one of Montreal’s pioneering tall commercial buildings and is generally regarded as the city’s first skyscraper.

The reverse is especially interesting for postal-history collectors. It carries an early divided-back format with printed instructions permitting correspondence on the left side for Canada, the United States and several European countries, together with the printed postal rates “1¢ for Canada, U.S.; 2¢ abroad.”
Dating approximately c. 1905–1910, consistent with the early divided-back design, postal instructions and period streetcar scene.
