Rare Vintage Uzbek Lakai Tribal Khurjin (Ceremonial Saddle Bag) with MirrorWork, Hand-Plaited Wool, Indigo-Dyed Fibers & Elaborate Tassels
This exceptional hand-crafted tribal textileis a remarkable example of traditional Lakai or Uzbek ceremonial weaving fromCentral Asia. Entirely handmade from hand-plaited wool cords with elaboratemirror appliqué, colorful pom-poms, and dramatic braided tassels, it representsthe extraordinary artistry of village textile traditions along the historicSilk Road.
The body measures approximately 28½ incheslong with an additional 11 inches of spectacular braided tassel fringe. This iscomposed of 24 individually formed heavy tassels. The top measures 12 incheswide and the bottom is 16 inches wide.
Two braided side cords, about 39 inches long, each terminate in additionaldecorative pom-poms and tassels. Nine hand-applied mirror medallions embellishthe front, surrounded by geometric embroidery in deep indigo, magenta,raspberry, orange, and cream.
Age: circa 1940–1970.It has enough honest wear on the plaited cords and oxidation on the mirrormounts to suggest decades of age.
Condition is unusually good for a textile ofthis type that was clearly put to use. This is structurally sound with nosignificant unraveling. The tassels remain remarkably full and overall there’slittle fading, just mellowing of the colors with age. The mirrors and tassels allappear present.
The wool exhibits beautiful variation in shade that suggests traditionalhand-dyed fibers, giving the piece remarkable depth and richness. The reverseis equally impressive, revealing the painstaking hand-plaited construction thatmakes this textile both visually stunning and structurally robust.
Weighs about five pounds. This is asubstantial ethnographic textile, not a decorative souvenir. It would make anoutstanding addition to a collection of Central Asian tribal art, ethnographictextiles, or museum-quality folk art, and is equally striking as a wall displayin bohemian, maximalist, global, or eclectic interiors.
