He began his Aerospace career with the Materials Branch of the Guided Missile Development Division at Redstone Arsenal in 1951 and in 1960 transferred to NASA working under Wernher von Braun. He specialized in evaluating and testing materials for rockets and spacecraft including researching effects of low temp and hydrogen on materials (From White Sands to Redstone ABMA and MARSHALL SPACE FLIGHT CENTER. Mr. Charles Cataldo, Sr. was awarded Exceptional Service Medal and Yuri Gagarin Diploma among many others for his work on Jupiter \"C\" / Redstone Rocket, Saturn, Apollo, Apollo-Soyuz and early Space Shuttle Development programs, Going on to work on the Shuttle Retooling and Space Station. Mr. Cataldo served as Deputy Chief of Materials Division and then later Assistant Director of the Material and Processes Laboratory.
