This Native American Inlaid gemstone pendant and earring set was handmade by Daniel Pena Coriz, a well-known silversmith and gemstone artisan from the Kewa Pueblo (Santo Domingo Native American).
The inlaid gemstones are primarily Lapis Lazuli with some light blue turquoise and red coral highlighting. The Lapis has tiny silver colored inclusions. The large pendant is 3 3/4 inches long including the large, circular bail, and 2 3/4 inches long without the circular bail. It is teardrop shape and is 1 1/2 inches wide at the widest point. The inlaid gemstones are mounted in a sawtooth bezel surrounded by stamp work. The back of the pendant features Daniel Coriz's personal Hallmark; a large, stylized eagle with "D Coriz" in script below.
The circular bail is 3/4 inches in diameter and sized to fit over a string a silver beads or gemstone beads. This makes it much more versatile than a pendant with a small bail which is already strung into a necklace. The large circular bail easily slides of the hook on the back side of the pendant leaving a large hook type bail which will accommodate a silver chain or other type of necklace. This means the pendant can be added to one of your other necklaces then moved to yet another necklace or chain. A very versatile pendant.
The matching earrings are also teardrop shaped and feature Lapis Lazuli, red coral, light blue turquoise and also tiny mother of pearl pieces. These are all mounted on a mother of pearl backing. Daniel Coriz is known for using mother of pearl on earring backs; it makes the earring lighter and easier to wear. The earring without the hooks are 2 inches long, the hooks add another 3/4 inch to make a hanging length of 2 3/4 inches.
I bought this pendant set at the Indian Marketin 2012 in Sante Fe at an sale hosted by the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian. It may have been previously owned, but I have not worn it. The writing on the back of the pendant seems to be the museums notation when the jewelry set was acquired.
