L. Frank Baum (Lyman Frank Baum) was an American author, best known for writingThe Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He was born on May 15, 1856, in Chittenango, New York. Baum\'s career began in theater, where he wrote and produced plays, many of which were for children. His first book,Mother Goose in Prose, was published in 1897, but his Oz seriesbrought him lasting fame.The Wonderful Wizard of Ozwas published in 1900, and it quickly became a hit, partly due to its imaginative world and its departure from the fairy-tale conventions of the time.

Baum wrote 13 Oz books, starting withThe Wonderful Wizard of Ozand continuing with titles likeThe Marvelous Land of OzandThe Emerald City of Oz.
