Beautiful handmade Nicaraguan art pottery vase featuring a large stylized frog surrounded by tropical foliage in rich shades of green, terracotta red, orange and earthy brown.
This piece is characteristic of the pottery traditions associated with San Juan de Oriente, Nicaragua, an area well known for its decorative ceramics. The design combines hand-applied color with carved/sgraffito linework and deeply textured recessed areas, giving the surface wonderful dimension.
The frog and tropical imagery make this an especially appealing example of Central American folk and artisan pottery. Frog imagery is frequently associated with the region’s lush rainforest environment and themes of nature, water and fertility.
