The image depicts Parson Brownlow seated in three-quarter profile with his right hand inside his suit jacket. The edges of the card are soiled and there is glue remnant to the center of the verso. The American newspaper publisher, Methodist minister, prisoner of war and politician William Gannaway \"Parson\" Brownlow (1805-1877) rose to prominence in East Tennessee as the editor of the \"Whig\" which supported Henry Clay\'s Whig Party ideals and opposed the secession of the Southern slave states in the period leading up to the Civil War. Returning to Tennessee in 1863, he was elected governor with support from the U.S. Army and aligned with Tennessee\'s Radical Republicans supporting Abraham Lincoln\'s policies. Opposing the policies of conservative Republicans, his progressive policies helped Tennessee to become the first former Confederate state to be admitted into the Union. He subsequently served as United States Senator from Tennessee from 1869 to 1875.
