Original WWII Photo Paratrooper Behind Enemy Lines 82nd Airborne Market Garden:
$749.00

An original Type 1 WWII photo of the \"82nd Airborne Division dropping into GRAVE-NIJMEGEN, Holland, sixty (60) miles behind the German lines.\" It is dated September 17, 1944 and was captioned by and comes from the estate of a Colonel (then Captain) of the 82nd Airborne. The photo is 5\" x 7\".
The photo is of Operation Market Garden in process. The Captain had previously jumped behind enemy lines in Sicily and as a pathfinder into Normandy on D Day. Four months after this photo, he earned the Silver Star for taking out machine gun nests in Belgium. He was a true American hero and quite a bad ass.
Excellent condition as shown. It has been protected in a cardboard sleeve. A touch of silvering.
A museum quality photograph and a superb addition to any collection or wall. I\'ll pay for full insurance on this important photo. I ship every day the post office is open and I always combine shipping. Please see my store for more artifacts of history.
Operation Market Garden (excerpted from the 82nd Airborne entry in Wikipedia):On 17 September, the \"All American\" Division conducted its fourth and final combat jump of World War II. Fighting off German counterattacks, the division captured its objectives between Grave, and Nijmegen....
In the afternoon of Wednesday 20 September 1944, the 82nd Airborne Division successfully conducted an opposed assault crossing of the Waal river. War correspondent Bill Downs, who witnessed the assault, described it as \"a single, isolated battle that ranks in magnificence and courage with Guam, Tarawa, Omaha Beach. A story that should be told to the blowing of bugles and the beating of drums for the men whose bravery made the capture of this crossing over the Waal possible.\"
