Superb pair of 19th-century albumen photographs of Norway, mounted on a large-format stiff paper mat, likely derived from a rare turn-of-the-century portfolio. The bottom photo is a photography by important early Norwegian photographer Olaf Martin Peder Vaering (1837-1906), so I am assuming the top image is as well since both are mounted together. Beautiful and evocative images, richly toned, the top image measuring 6.75" by 5", the bottom 7.5 by 5.75", with total area of mat 17" by 13". Several of his photos are in the collection of MOMA, and his photographs are rarely offered for sale. Photos in excellent condition, a few light smudges to margins of mat.
Some info found online: "Olaf Martin Peder Vaering established the company O. Vaering in 1868. From the late 1860's to the early 1880's he worked in Sarpsborg, then again in Christiania, where he had several different studios. He specialized in art photography and ran an art publishing house."
