Postcard 1900s Rome Italy Pre-Linen Piazza Colonna Column of Marcus Aurelius For Sale

Taken from an elevated vantage point, this beautifully preserved early phototype postcard of Rome\'s Piazza Colonna shows the Column of Marcus Aurelius — all 30 meters of its spiral-carved commemorative shaft — dominating a bustling Edwardian square alive with pedestrians in long skirts and frock coats, horse-drawn carriages at the kerb, and the neoclassical facades of the Palazzo Wedekind and Palazzo Chigi closing the scene with architectural authority. The column, erected between 180 and 193 AD to celebrate Marcus Aurelius\'s campaigns, wears its bronze statue of St. Paul (added by Pope Sixtus V in 1589) at the summit, a detail just visible in the sharp photographic rendering. The message on the reverse is written in flowing Italian or period script, filling the \"Cartolina Postale Italiana (Carte Postale)\" back in the characteristic vertical script of the early divided-back era, with text discussing what appears to be the column, \"Daniela\" or a name, \"the Palazzo,\" and columnar architecture — a correspondent writing knowledgeably about Roman monuments. This early 20th-century card, numbered 200 at upper right, is a fine example of Edwardian Roman topographic postal ephemera.
