Pre Columbian Primitive Redware Clay Ghord Style Bottle Vessel:
$60.00

Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Redware TraditionsMany prehistoric and historic indigenous potting cultures across the Americas—such as the Colima, Moche, Casas Grandes, and Tarahumara civilizations—were master potters who did not use pottery wheels. Instead, they utilized hand-coiling and burnishing techniques to form vessels that intentionally replicated organic vegetal shapes, most notably the squash or double-gourd (bule or tecomate). The Firing Marks: The dark brown and black splotches across the bulbous red body are fire clouds. These are not painted on; they occur organically during traditional pit-firing or open-air bonfire firing when burning wood or fuel directly touches the raw clay surface, cutting off oxygen and trapping carbon in the clay. The Surface Finish: The soft, semi-matte texture is characteristic of burnished earthenware (terracotta). Rather than applying a glassy chemical glaze, historic potters rubbed the leather-hard clay with smooth river stones or wood tools to compress the surface pores before firing, creating a beautiful natural sheen.Handcrafted Gourd-Form Pottery AlternativesIf you are looking to expand a collection of native, primitive, or hand-burnished redware vessels that celebrate these organic shapes, several distinct regional pottery.Thank you for looking at my items.
