💚RARE 1830 GEORGIAN BIEDERMEIER BOHEMIAN Emerald CUT GLASS PERFUME BOTTLE STOPPER

A rare and wonderfully substantial late-Georgian emerald-green perfume bottle or flacon, probably made in within the Austrian Empire, Bohemia during the Biedermeier period, circa 1820–1840.

Although only 4¼” high, this remarkable little bottle weighs 246g and has the presence of a much larger piece. It has been hand blown in exceptionally thick, deeply coloured emerald glass before being extensively cut and polished into a wonderfully architectural form.

The squat rectangular body has fourteen broad, individually cut side panels, with further angular facet cutting across its heavily chamfered shoulders. These substantial polished planes catch the light beautifully, changing the glass from almost black-green at its thickest points to luminous emerald and blue-green through the more deeply cut areas.

The short neck has been carefully cut into eight facets and retains its matching fitted stopper.

The stopper is a miniature jewel in its own right. It has been lens cut towards clarity in three distinct horizontal layers, producing rows of oval and geometric windows through the dark emerald glass. Its upper surface has been flat cut and highly polished, while the long fitted peg has been individually ground to the neck.

The base has also been flat cut and polished but, importantly, retains its prominent rough snapped pontil at the centre. This untouched pontil is compelling evidence of the bottle’s early hand-blown manufacture and forms an important part of its history; it has deliberately not been ground away or disguised.

The combination of saturated coloured glass, massive panel cutting, chamfered shoulders, polygonal neck, complex matching stopper and snapped pontil is characteristic of the highly accomplished Bohemian glassmaking tradition of the early nineteenth century.

In British historical terms the bottle is late Georgian or Regency to William IV; stylistically and geographically it belongs to the contemporary Central European Biedermeier period.

It is unsigned, as expected for a piece of this age. An individual glasshouse cannot presently be established, although its material, form and cutting strongly suggest an accomplished Bohemian workshop.

A fabulously tactile, jewel-like survivor approaching two centuries old—and a particularly desirable addition to a collection of early perfume bottles, Bohemian glass or Georgian dressing-table objects.

CONDITION:

Very good antique condition for its considerable age. The bottle and matching fitted stopper present beautifully, with expected light surface scratching, shelf wear and minor signs of use commensurate with approximately two centuries of age. The rough snapped pontil beneath the polished base is an original manufacturing feature and not later damage. The ground stopper peg naturally shows contact wear from use.
