Standing proudly in rich natural amethyst glass, this hand-blown blob-top beer bottle once circulated through the bustling railroad and steel town of Steelton, Pennsylvania, where thousands of hardworking men ended long shifts with an ice-cold local beer.

That simple statement tells an important story. Glass bottles were valuable assets around the turn of the 20th century, often costing breweries nearly as much as the beer inside. Customers paid a deposit and returned empties to be washed, sterilized, and refilled dozens of times. These embossed warnings discouraged theft and helped keep the bottling business profitable.

E. G. Irvin operated the Steelton Bottling Works during the great age of independent bottlers, likely circa 1895-1915. This bottle was hand blown into a mold and finished with a hand-tooled blob top just before fully automatic bottle machines took over the industry.

Steelton was one of Pennsylvania's booming industrial centers, built around the enormous steel mills that supplied rails, bridges, skyscrapers, and structural steel across America. Every day, thousands of laborers—many recent immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe—worked exhausting shifts amid furnaces, smoke, molten iron, and deafening machinery.

At the end of those shifts, neighborhood saloons and bottlers like E. G. Irvin were part of daily life. Beer was safer than questionable municipal water in many places, and local bottling works supplied taverns, hotels, grocery stores, and families alike.

One can easily imagine this very bottle packed in wooden crates, delivered by horse-drawn wagon through dusty streets lined with brick row houses, railroad tracks, smokestacks, and glowing blast furnaces.

Originally manufactured in clear flint glass, decades of sunlight transformed the manganese decolorizer into this stunning lavender-amethyst color. This natural solarized purple hue has become highly desirable among collectors and makes the bottle display beautifully under natural light.
