RARE Antique Hebrew postcard by Rabbi Tuvia Geffen Atlanta dated December 20, 1933

Rabbi Tuvia Geffen (1870–1970) was a distinguished Orthodox rabbi and halachic authority who served as rabbi of Congregation Shearith Israel in Atlanta, Georgia, for approximately sixty years. Born in Lithuania and educated in the great rabbinic tradition of Eastern Europe, he became one of the leading Jewish religious figures in the American South. He is p best known for his famous involvement with Coca-Cola: as a rabbi responsible for Jewish dietary law in Atlanta, he investigated the drink’s secret ingredients and determined how it could be made acceptable according to Jewish law. His correspondence and halachic analysis regarding Coca-Cola eventually became one of the most famous episodes in the history of American kosher certification. Beyond Coca-Cola, Rabbi Geffen was a prolific scholar who dealt with questions of kashrut, Passover, mikvah, marriage and divorce, and many other practical areas of halachah. His writings and responsa reflect the challenge of applying traditional Jewish law to the rapidly changing realities of twentieth-century American life.
