This is an antique pewter teapot produced by C.P. Wayne & Son in Philadelphia, dating to the 1830s.
Identification & History
Maker: C.P. Wayne & Son was a firm operating in Philadelphia during the mid-19th century.
Material: Made of pewter (an alloy primarily of tin) or Britannia metal, a harder version of pewter that became popular in the 19th century for its ability to hold a high polish.
Design: This specific bulbous form with a tiered lid and decorative handle is characteristic of Early American pewter styles from the 1820s–1840s.
Condition:
Some dents and scratches and white deposits, those are pictured in close ups.
The marker C.P. Wayne & Son is stamped but parcially erased on the base of the pot.
The pictures of the stamp or engraving were made with a zoom of my camera lens .
There were also price or inventory description stickers close to the signature, which left a gummy residue.
I don't want to clean it and erase the stamping or clean the pot and erase the age patina in the metal. This tea pot literally traveled in time from late 1800s to today!.
It will make a wonderful addition to your antique metal ware collection or be a beautiful decorative piece at your next tea party.
Caleb P. Wayne was a prominent Philadelphia-based retailer and merchant active in the early 19th century. While he sold a variety of high-end goods, teapots bearing his mark are most commonly found in pewter or coin silver.
