Your for sale is a REMARKABLE, Rare Antique late 1890s -early 1900s, Caroffere, Acetylene Gas, Bicycle? Motorcycle? headlight Lamp marked and manufactured by “Twentieth Century” with unique Flared horn-shaped Front Reflector, two gems and either side and original bracket.
The large, horn-shaped cone at the front acts as a parabolic reflector. Because the flame generated by acetylene gas is small but intensely bright, the wide reflector maximizes the beam's spread to light up dark roads ahead.
The dark, faceted crystal jewels on the sides of the housing is actually a small colored green and red glass window. This acted as a side-marker light so pedestrian traffic or cross-street carriages could see the cyclist from the side at night.
The Mounting bar post and clamp bracket attached to the rear were engineered to secure the entire lantern firmly to a bicycle’s or motorcycle’s front fork or handlebar stem.
Every component of this unique, steampunk-like aesthetic served a strict, mechanical function to generate and control chemical lighting before electrical systems or batteries were practical.
Lamp is marked “Twentieth Century” on the back.
