Bessarabia was a historical region of Eastern Europe between the Dniester and Prut rivers today largely within Moldova with parts in Ukraine. During the First World War it was a highly significant borderland region connected with the wider Eastern Front and the military history of Poland Romania Russia and the former Austro Hungarian sphere.
