In the early 1980s I was an underachieving Florida high school student who had stopped reading. Stephen King is the writer who made me want to again.
My mother was so grateful that she sent him a thank-you letter and a $10 check for the charity of his choice. She may have hoped for a signature. Instead, King and his assistant, Stephanie Leonard, both endorsed the check—and sent her several books he had signed on the title page.
Forty years later,I still remember that thoughtfulness. Not many people outsmarted my mother.
