The Meaning of the Saint John the Baptist Icon
Saint John the Baptist is honored as the Prophet and Forerunner of Christ. The son of Zacharias and Elizabeth, he prepared the people for the Lord through a life of asceticism and a call to repentance.
John baptized in the Jordan and bore witness to Jesus as the Lamb of God. His faithful witness also brought suffering: after rebuking Herod’s unlawful marriage, he was imprisoned and beheaded.
