Outstanding Sammy Davis Jr. double-autograph grouping from 1965, consisting of an inscribed and signed photograph, a separately signed typed letter, and the original mailing envelope. The pieces have remained together since they were originally received.The approximately 5 x 7 inch black-and-white photograph depicts Sammy Davis Jr. seated on a ladder and is boldly inscribed in blue ink:“THE BEST”
Sammy Davis Jr.The accompanying letter is typed on SAMMY DAVIS JR., 245 W. 44th Street, New York, N.Y. letterhead and dated August 31, 1965. It is addressed to William Armstrong of Wolcott, New York and bears a large Sammy Davis Jr. signature in ink beneath the typed closing.Most importantly, the contents of the letter directly establish the provenance of the signed photograph. Davis thanks Armstrong for his letter and specifically states that he is sending “the autographed picture you asked for.”Also included is the original mailing envelope addressed to Mr. William Armstrong, Box 113, Wolcott, New York, retaining its period postal markings.The photograph and letter therefore form a particularly appealing matched autograph group: the dated correspondence specifically documents the signed photograph being sent to the original recipient.Close-up photographs of both signatures are provided. The two signatures show natural differences in execution while sharing the characteristic overall form. The photograph is signed in blue ink and the letter separately signed in darker ink.Included:
