He is the first “collector” in Brittany with, in his pocket, an official mission from a ministry. This observation of traditional melodies will inspire, in his works, the construction and turn of his musical phrases. This is how, in two of his operas, Brittany in 1887 and Myrdhin in 1905, his interest in his tradition became evident.
BiographySon of a shipowner and nephew of Adolphe Billault, he was born rue Racine in Nantes on February 2, 1840. Destined for a career in law, Louis-Albert decided, after his baccalaureate at the Nantes high school and having studied law, to become a composer, having already undertaken music studies at the Nantes conservatory at the same time. He also went through the Paris Conservatory, and had Ambroise Thomas as his teacher.
In 1862, he won the Prix de Rome. It was therefore in Italy that he discovered the music of Palestrina and learned to love popular music, an interest which would later extend to folk music. many different cultures.
In 1878, he was appointed professor of music history at the Paris Conservatory. He is the first musician to present exoticism to the French public, both in the popular domain and in the classical domain, and in particular Russian music, then very little known.
He died in Vernouillet in 1910
ContributionWe owe him in particular the creation of an opera taking place on the shores of the Caspian Sea, Thamara, on a libretto by Louis Gallet, created on December 28, 1891 at the Paris Opera (reprised in 1906).
It also collects and publishes popular Breton pages. In 1876, he was charged with a mission to Greece which resulted in a work on his return entitled Thirty popular melodies from Greece & the Orient. Then, from August 1881, he obtained a new mission to carry out the same “investigation” in Basse-Bretagne, which also resulted in 1885 with a collection of 30 popular melodies from Basse-Bretagne
His own compositions are clearly inspired by several styles of popular music. The two operas Thamara (1890) and Myrdhin (1905), set in Baku and Brittany respectively, can be considered his masterpieces, and both deal with the struggle between paganism and Christianity.
In addition to a magnificent Stabat Mater (1874) in homage to Palestrina, he wrote dramatic cantatas celebrating historical figures like Vasco da Gama and Anne of Brittany. His less numerous orchestral works include a Symphony (1861), a Religious Symphony (1868) with choir and the symphonic poems Carnival of Athens, Egyptian Dance, The Burial of Ophelia, The Son of Saul and the Cambodian Rhapsody.
His chamber music includes numerous works for the piano and a considerable amount of melodies and song cycles drawing on Armenian, Celtic, Greek, English, Scottish and of course Breton folklore.
Bourgault-Ducoudray also wrote extensively on musical subjects inspired by his various travels. He writes Malagache Dance for the piano.
The Cambodian Rhapsody, written in 1882, is remarkably orchestrated. Although not as impressive and avant-garde as Fanelli's pages, it contains genuine Cambodian musical themes, while recalling the technique of Balakirev, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov, whose works he had promoted.
In the 1900s, he composed the music for the temptation of Joan of Arc to poetry by F. Frank. dedicated to Madame Judith Lassalle.
