Description

Offered is a beautiful hand-painted Limoges porcelain trinket box from France, signed by the artist Stephen Phleston (signature interpreted from the cursive inscription) and dated 2003. This is an exceptional custom-decorated example featuring the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom rendered in vibrant hand-painted enamels with heavy gilt metal mounts.

Unlike typical floral Limoges boxes, this piece celebrates British heraldry with the iconic Lion of England, Unicorn of Scotland, St. Edward’s Crown, the royal motto “Dieu et Mon Droit,” and the historic Order of the Garter motto “Honi Soit Qui Maly Pense” on the base.

The lid also incorporates two permanently mounted circulating coins:

* British coin featuring Queen Elizabeth II
* Mexican 1 Peso bi-metallic coin

The artwork depicts the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom, incorporating the Lion of England, Unicorn of Scotland, St. Edward’s Crown, and the royal motto “Dieu et Mon Droit” (“God and My Right”), the official motto of the British monarch. The underside also bears the medieval Order of the Garter motto, “Honi Soit Qui Maly Pense,” a traditional variant of Honi soit qui mal y pense (“Shame on him who thinks evil of it”), one of the oldest and most distinguished chivalric mottos in British history.

The permanently mounted British and Mexican coins appear to have been intentionally incorporated into the design, suggesting this may have been a special commission or personalized presentation piece rather than a standard production Limoges box.
