Small, Vtg Hand Polished Incised Blackware Pottery Vessel, Animal Effigy Spout. For Sale

This is a vintage, small, hand-polished black ware pottery vessel featuring an animal effigy spout and incised geometric patterns, highly characteristic of traditional Mexican folk art. It is a dark, burnished black clay with a smooth polished sheen. A sculpted animal head - resembling a fox, dog or coyote - projecting from the rim. Etched geometric ( on top side of body) and scroll designs (on bottom side of body) encircling the bulbous body of the pot. The pot is unsigned. This piece shares strong similarities with mid-20th-century incised black clay pottery from regions like Tonala, Jalisco (often associated with makers such as the Mateo family) or animal effigy pottery traditions from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua.Pre-owned it is in very good condition, no chips or cracks. It does have two slightly rough spots on the top rim behind the head but they might be original to the piece. It measures 3-3/4” high x 3” at widest point across.
