The Steuben Excalibur
Designed by James A. Houston (a Canadian artist, 1921-2005) and made by Steuben Glass, Inc. in 1963, the Excalibur is a landmark sculpture piece from Steuben's Modern era.
It features a colorless lead glass "stone" with a faceted design, combined with sterling silver and 18-carat gold craftsmanship—a medieval broadsword with silver blade and gold-wrapped handle. This is Steuben design number 1000.
Steuben's Significance:
The Steuben Glassworks was founded in Corning, New York, in 1903 by Frederick Carder and Thomas Hawkes. The company became known for its high-quality art glass and exceptional clarity. In 1933, Steuben shifted its focus to clear lead crystal, establishing a new standard of excellence in modern glass design. Steuben glass became a symbol of American artistry and was frequently given as diplomatic gifts by U.S. presidents.
